Mrs. Vicens holds a Specialized Master Degree in New Music Performance at the Musik Akademie Basel under the tutorship of Jürg Henneberger (Ensemble Phoenix Basel) and Mike Svoboda.

While studying piano in Chile, Catalina Vicens had already showed a great interest for New Music, which has developed until today. Early in her career as a harpsichordist, she gathered new music written for the instrument, both by well-established composers and and by young composers. With the aim of disseminating new music and showing the sound limits of the harpsichord, she includes 21st repertoire in many of her solo and chamber music concerts.  In 2013, she was principal accompanist of the production of Georg Friedrich Haas' microtonal Opera, premiered at the Schwetzinger Festspiele (Germany).

Catalina Vicens, Contemporary Harpsichord

"Theatralisch, komödiantisch, hinreißend! / Theatrical, comically spellbinding!"

- Badische Neueste Nachrichten -

In her continuous search for sound possibilities, Catalina is committed to work closely with composers in the creation of works for virginal, harpsichord and medieval keyboards, wanting to extend the early keyboards repertory to new boundaries and new audiences. She is the dedicatee of contemporary pieces written by North- and South American and European composers.

As member of  “Zone Expérimentale Basel”  she took part in projects under the lead of Mike Svoboda (USA), Marcus Weiss (Switzerland), Terry Riley (USA), Theodor Ross (Germany) among others.

Her repertoire ranges from the modern composers of the late 19th-century for pedal harpsichord up to newly composed pieces with extended technique for amplified virginal.
